How to Host a Local Event
Individuals are welcome (and needed!) to organize local Connections that may include a fundraising initiative. We can provide ideas, guidance and support in organizing your special event.
Making Connections
Connections are special events that bring our community members together to share stories, resources, treatment programs and concerns as well as learn about treatment therapies and research. Connections can range from small, casual get-togethers to formal events with one or more featured programs or speakers. The type of Connection depends upon the Connection organizer’s interests, abilities and geographic location (i.e., how many other community members are in the organizer’s area).
The Connections Resource Book provides suggestions to help you in organizing and hosting a successful Connection.
Event Ideas
Here are some ideas that could be used to help raise funds for research:
-
GET AN A-THON GOING ON
Bike-a-thon, roll-a-thon, dance-a-thon, walk-a-thon or similar activity
-
RESTAURANT PROMOTION
Restaurant Promotion, where a restaurant donates a portion of sales on aparticular date. Or try a Coupon Booklet Promotion – some restaurants or grocery store chains offer coupon books.
-
SOCIAL GET TOGETHERS
Social – a barbecue, picnic, breakfast, or dinner. Sell tickets for the meal that will also include a donation. You can add a raffle or auction to raise additional funds.
-
“PARTY PLAN” EVENTS
Hold a “party plan” event with a direct-selling company willing to donate a percentage of the proceeds (Tupperware, Pampered Chef and Avon are popular choices).
-
POPULAR EVENTS
Bake Sale, Car Wash, Rummage or Yard Sale, or Gift Wrapping Table
-
It is important to involve local businesses as sponsors of your event. Sponsors only have to be asked.
